Rosco 111

Overview

Rosco 111 "Tough Rolux" is a diffusion material (scrim) from the Roscolux/Cinegel range by manufacturer Rosco. It is not a color filter nor grip equipment, but a light-shaping material placed in front of a spotlight or fixture to soften and broaden the light distribution.

Within the Roscolux diffusion series (including 100 Frost, 101 Light Frost, 103 Tough Frost), the 111 is considered the densest diffusion in the series. It creates very strong scattering and a correspondingly significant loss of sharpness and intensity in the transmitted light.

Function and Light Effect

Diffusion materials alter the shadow or scattering characteristics and the beam shape of a light source. The Tough Rolux 111 is particularly aggressively designed for this:

• It scatters light almost 180 degrees, distributing it in an almost hemispherical pattern in front of the material.
• It transforms a directional source into a very broad, soft surface and largely dissolves hard shadows.
• Due to its high density, the light loss is significantly greater compared to lighter frost types.

Typical applications include creating soft, broad light sources, smoothing out hotspots, and backlighting diffusion surfaces, windows, or cyc/background surfaces.

Construction and Availability

The material is designed for continuous use under hot stage and film lights. According to the manufacturer, the "Tough" films are produced using a tri-extrusion process: the active layer is embedded between two very thin clear carrier layers, which reduces color/material migration and extends its lifespan.
