Blackmagic Pyxis 12K

The Blackmagic Pyxis 12K was introduced at NAB in April 2025, bringing the 12K sensor from the URSA Cine into a significantly more manageable body. The sensor measures 35.64 × 23.32 mm — Blackmagic calls this Large Format, not Full Frame — and reads out 12,288 × 8,040 pixels, which is just under 99 megapixels.

Technical Specifications

16 stops of dynamic range, native ISO 800. Unlike the 6K model, the 12K has no Dual Native ISO — anyone who assumes this from the sister camera's datasheet will plan their night scenes incorrectly. Recording is done in Blackmagic RAW at various compression ratios (3:1 to 18:1 as well as Q0 to Q5) onto two CFexpress Type B slots, plus a USB-C port for external media and H.264 proxies.

Classification

At launch, the body cost $4,995 USD; the list price is now higher — Blackmagic adjusted it following customs announcements. Even at the upper end of this range, the Pyxis remains an order of magnitude below the RED V-Raptor and Sony Venice 2. The difference lies less in the image and more in the ecosystem: Blackmagic RAW is proprietary but royalty-free, while REDCODE and X-OCN serve the established DI pipelines. If you are delivering to a facility that is set up for these, clarify this before shooting.
