Quarter Grid: aluminum honeycomb louver with 6.35 mm cells that reduces light intensity by approximately 1.5 stops with sharp beam definition.

Technical Details

Quarter Grids are made of anodized aluminum or black steel in a honeycomb structure and are available in standard sizes from 15x15 cm to 120x120 cm. The 6.35 mm mesh size results in a light loss of 1.5 stops with HMI lights, and approximately 1.2 stops with LED panels. Magnetic variants for modern LED panels weigh between 200-800 grams depending on size. High-quality grids use black anodization with 98% light absorption for minimal stray reflections.

History & Development

The grid system was developed in 1962 by Mole-Richardson for their Fresnel spotlights. The Quarter Grid became established as a standard in Hollywood productions from 1975 onwards, after cinematographer Gordon Willis used it extensively in "The Godfather" (1972). Chimera revolutionized the system in 1986 with foldable fabric grids for softboxes. Since 2018, magnetic snap-grid systems from Aputure and ARRI have dominated the market for LED lighting.

Practical Application in Film

Roger Deakins systematically used Quarter Grids in "Blade Runner 2049" for precise facial modeling without light spill onto backgrounds. Typical workflow: attach the grid directly to the light fixture, maintain a distance of 2-3 meters from the subject, combined with barndoors for additional light shaping. Advantage: sharp light edges without hard shadows from flags. Disadvantage: significant light loss requires higher base output or higher ISO values.

Comparison & Alternatives

In contrast to Half Grids (12.7 mm mesh size, 60-degree beam angle), the Quarter Grid produces sharper light limitation with less diffusion. Eighth Grids (3.2 mm) offer even more precise control at 25% higher light loss. Modern alternatives include optical spots with iris diaphragms (Prolycht Orion) or digital projectors (ARRI SkyPanel X), which enable variable light shaping without mechanical attachments. For budget productions, DIY solutions made from eggcrates or honeycomb panels replace expensive grids.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
