Pulse Effect

Integrated lighting effect (FX preset) in modern LED fixtures that rhythmically fades brightness between minimum and maximum levels, creating pulsing light.

Overview

The Pulse Effect (also known as "Pulse" or "Pulsing") is not a standalone device or grip equipment, but a permanently integrated lighting effect mode (FX preset) in modern LED fixtures. When activated, the fixture does not change its brightness rigidly, but continuously and smoothly fades it up and down between a lower and an upper value. The result is a rhythmically "breathing," pulsating light.

In contrast to the hard Strobe effect (sudden on/off), the brightness change in the Pulse Effect is soft and periodic. The effect is part of the standard effect library of many current fixtures and can be found across manufacturers in the FX menus.

Functionality and Parameters

A Pulse Effect is defined by a maximum brightness, a minimum brightness, and a periodicity (repetition rate); the brightness curve follows a soft, sinusoidal fade up and down. On Aputure fixtures (e.g., LS 600x Pro), the following parameters can be set for the FX modes:

ParameterSetting Range (Aputure LS 600x Pro)
Brightness0%–100%
Frequency (Rate)1–10 as well as Random ("R")
CCT (Color Temperature, for Bicolor)2700 K–6500 K

Note: The exact parameter selection, naming, and behavior of the Pulse Effect vary depending on the manufacturer and model. The values above apply to the specified Aputure series; other fixtures may offer additional or different control parameters.

Use on Set

The Pulse Effect is used when a softly oscillating light is needed in the shot without an operator having to manually "ride" the board. Typical applications:

  • Simulation of a beating or softly pulsating light (e.g., medical equipment, alarm/status indicators, sci-fi atmosphere).
  • Subtle, lively lighting moods where a slight rhythmic change in brightness brings movement to a scene.
  • Music video, commercial, and stage contexts where a "breathing" light in rhythm is desired.

Since it is purely a software preset of the fixture, the effect can be accessed and parameterized directly on the device, via app, or through DMX/console.
