Digital VFX cleanup technique where unwanted image elements such as wires, rigs, or tracking markers are painted out frame by frame.

Overview

A Paint Out (also called "Paint," "Cleanup," or "Removal") in digital post-production refers to the targeted removal of unwanted elements from a captured image. Unlike a traditional lighting or grip device, it is not hardware but a pure software technique in visual effects work. The term originates from the compositing and roto/paint department and describes the "painting out" of image content that was unavoidable on set or was deliberately accepted for later removal.

Paint work is closely related to rotoscoping and is often handled by the same department in many studios. While Roto creates masks for matting, Paint Out handles the actual retouching and reconstruction of image areas.

Typical Use Cases

  • Wire and Rig Removal: Removal of visible stunt wires, rigs, greenscreen poles, or camera cranes.
  • Tracking Marker Removal: Retouching tracking points and markers that were applied to greenscreens or sets for matchmoving.
  • Logo and Text Removal: Eliminating trademarks or legally problematic lettering.
  • Beauty and Set Cleanup: Removal of reflections, crew reflections, cables, dirt, or anachronisms in the image.
  • Dust and Scratch Removal: Cleaning up film material defects.

Technique and Workflow

Two main approaches are primarily used for the actual painting out:

Spatial CloningPixels are cloned from one area to another within the same frame (comparable to the clone stamp tool in Photoshop).
Temporal CloningPixels are taken from other frames to cleanly replace moving elements.

For complex shots, Clean Plates and Camera Projection are often used: a single image is retouched cleanly and projected onto the scene as a "card" along a tracked camera path, so that not every frame needs to be painted individually. Common software for Paint Out includes compositing and paint packages such as Nuke (RotoPaint), Silhouette, Mocha, or After Effects. The result is typically delivered as a rendered clean plate and/or a compositing script.

Ich plane Paint-Out-freundliche Aufnahmen durch saubere Hintergrundplatten und vermeide komplexe Texturen hinter zu entfernenden Objekten. Clean-Plates drehe ich systematisch mit, da sie den Paint-Out-Aufwand von 8 Stunden auf 2 Stunden pro Einstellung reduzieren können. Bei Rigger-Arbeiten achte ich auf kontrastarme Seile gegen einfarbige Hintergründe - schwarze Seile vor hellem Himmel sparen später 60% Compositing-Zeit.

Paint-Out ermöglicht mir riskantere Stunts mit sichtbaren Sicherheitsseilen und unsichtbare Kamerapositionierungen für spektakuläre Einstellungen. Ich lasse Mikrofone bewusst ins Bild ragen, wenn der Dialog wichtiger ist als die perfekte Kadrage - das Paint-Out kostet 500 Euro, ein Dialog-ADR 3.000 Euro. Historische Authentizität erreiche ich durch konsequentes Entfernen moderner Elemente wie Straßenschilder oder Satellitenschüsseln.

Paint-Out-Budgets kalkuliere ich mit 150-300 Euro pro Frame bei Standard-Entfernungen, komplexe Objekte kosten 400-800 Euro pro Frame. Ein 90-Minuten-Film benötigt durchschnittlich 2.000-5.000 Paint-Out-Frames, entspricht 300.000-1.500.000 Euro Postproduktionskosten. Externe Paint-Studios in Indien oder Osteuropa reduzieren Kosten um 40-60%, verlängern jedoch die Delivery-Zeit um 2-3 Wochen durch Revision-Zyklen.
