Digital Sputnik introduced the Orbiter Dome in 2019 in response to the growing demand for mobile softlight solutions. Cinematographers primarily use the Orbiter Dome for natural window light imitation and as a hair light source in interview situations. Unlike rectangular softboxes, the Orbiter Dome produces omnidirectional light without visible edges in the fall-off. For outdoor shoots in strong winds, the more stable but more expensive Dome XL with reinforced mounting points is recommended.
Als DoP schätze ich den Orbiter Dome für seine natürliche Lichtverteilung ohne sichtbare Hotspots – perfekt für Close-ups, wo ich weiches Licht brauche, aber keinen Platz für große Diffusoren habe. Die kreisrunden Catchlights sind allerdings charakteristisch und nicht immer gewünscht, weshalb ich bei Beauty-Shots oft doch zur rechteckigen Softbox greife.
Der Dome hilft mir dabei, authentische Stimmungen zu schaffen, besonders in häuslichen Szenen wo das Licht wie eine natürliche Raumbeleuchtung wirkt. Ich setze ihn gerne ein, wenn Schauspieler sich in alle Richtungen bewegen sollen, ohne dass sich die Lichtsituation dramatisch verändert – das gibt mehr Freiheit in der Inszenierung.
Mit 2.400 Euro Anschaffungskosten plus Orbiter-Leuchte ist das Investment überschaubar, zumal der Dome robust gebaut ist und selten Ersatz braucht. Der schnelle Auf- und Abbau spart täglich 15-20 Minuten Lichtzeit, was bei längeren Produktionen durchaus budgetrelevant wird – allerdings benötigen wir oft mehrere Einheiten für größere Sets.
