ND.9 neutral density value — reduces light by three stops without color shift; typically applied as gel #211 on windows and fixtures on set.

Overview

"ND.9" refers to a Neutral Density value of 0.9 in logarithmic density notation. The number 9 here signifies a density of 0.9, not an f-stop. A filter or gel with ND 0.9 reduces incoming light by three f-stops without altering the color temperature or hue ("neutral"). Theoretically, only one-eighth of the light (1/2 × 1/2 × 1/2 = 1/8) passes through the material.

In the camera world, the same reduction is often referred to as "ND8" or "3 Stops" — all three designations mean the same value. In lighting and grip departments, ND.9 is most commonly encountered as a lighting or window gel with the order number #211 (LEE Filters 211, Rosco E-Colour+ 211).

Density, Stops, and Transmission

Density is defined logarithmically: for every 0.3 density units, transmission is halved, meaning one f-stop per 0.3. This leads to the following classification of common ND values:

Density (ND)f-stopsCamera DesignationGel #
0.31 StopND2209
0.62 StopsND4210
0.93 StopsND8211
1.24 StopsND16299

Theoretically, ND 0.9 allows one-eighth (12.5%) of the light through. The measured values published by LEE Filters for gel 211 are practically close to this: around 11.8% transmission under tungsten light (3200 K).

Usage on Set

The ND.9 gel #211 is primarily used in the grip and lighting departments for two tasks:

  • Darkening Windows: For interior shots with daylight coming through windows, the gel balances the brightness difference between the bright outside world and the darker interior without tinting the view outside blue or warm. It is applied across the entire pane and is available as a wide roll (typically approx. 122 cm / 48" wide) to cover large window areas.
  • Dimming Lights: Placed in front of light fixtures, the gel reduces intensity without affecting color temperature — an alternative to electrical dimming, which would cause tungsten lights to shift warmer.

Besides the gel, ND 0.9 also exists as camera filters made of glass or polyester (e.g., square filters in matte box format). However, in the lighting/grip category, the lighting and window gel #211 is the usual form.
