MovieTech is a Munich-based manufacturer of camera support and grip equipment, including dollys, cranes, jibs, remote heads, and rail systems.

Overview

MovieTech (MovieTech AG, Munich) is a German manufacturer of camera support and grip equipment for professional film and television production. Founded in 1993, the company manufactures its products at its Munich facility ("Made in Germany") and supplies productions, rental houses, and resellers worldwide.

Unlike terms related to lighting, MovieTech is not a fixture or an ANSI lamp code, but rather a brand for camera movement equipment: devices used to precisely move, guide, and hold the camera during shooting. The company gained recognition through its developed and patented system of the retractable center column dolly.

Product Range

The product range is divided into several equipment categories for camera movement and rigging:

  • Dollys: Center column dollies (e.g., Magnum, Alpha), doorway dollies (4x4), and compact mini/slider dollies (e.g., Scooter)
  • Cranes & Jibs: Crane systems (including Kirin Crane, Crane 100, Crane 120, Combi Crane) and jib arms for manual or remote camera operation
  • Remote Heads: Remote-controlled camera heads (e.g., Alex Digital, Pelé, P10) for repeatable, precise movements
  • Tracks: Dolly track systems (Master Track) in aluminum and steel versions
  • Grip Accessories & Rigging: Grip kits and mounting accessories

Example: Magnum Dolly

The Magnum Dolly is considered the manufacturer's flagship product and is a common example of a MovieTech center column dolly. According to the manufacturer's specifications, it has the following key data:

FeatureSpecification (Manufacturer)
Center Column Load Capacity250 kg / 550 lbs
Column Travel165 cm
Steering ModesCRAB (linked), FREE (swivel, for track), FIXED (locked, including 45°)
Track Widths36 cm (narrow) and 62 cm (standard)
Driveelectromechanical, wireless remote control

On-Set Usage

MovieTech equipment is used to execute camera moves and movements in a controlled manner. Dollies are operated freely rolling (studio floor), on tracks, or with powered steering modes to achieve smooth moves. Cranes and jibs expand the range of motion vertically and in boom radius, while remote heads enable remote-controlled and repeatable movements, for instance, on a crane or dolly. This equipment is typically operated on set by the grip or camera stage department (Dolly Grip).
