Mo-Sys G30: gyro-stabilized 3-axis remote head by Mo-Sys supporting camera payloads up to 30 kg without gimbal lock.

Overview

The Mo-Sys G30 is a gyro-stabilized, remote-controlled 3-axis camera head (Remote Head) from the British manufacturer Mo-Sys Engineering. It is mounted below a camera rig and stabilizes and controls the camera via the Pan, Tilt, and Roll axes. It is used for dynamic, smooth shots, for example on cranes, vehicles, cable camera systems, or as a remote head for broadcast and film productions.

A characteristic feature is a compact, rigid frame geometry with a 45-degree axis arrangement. According to the manufacturer, a reordered axis priority (Pan, Roll, Tilt) ensures that all three axes remain active even when the camera is pointed vertically downwards, thus avoiding gimbal lock.

Maximum Payload30 kg / 66 lbs
Weight (Head Only)27 kg (without wire isolator)
AxesPan and Tilt free, Roll ±45°
DriveDirect drive motors with through holes
Wireless Remote Controloptional module, up to 300 m range

The drive motors have central through holes, eliminating the need for slip rings and special cables; standard cables and connectors can be used for the camera and lens, according to the manufacturer. Axis encoders are integrated into each motor unit, and their data can be directly passed on to virtual production and greenscreen systems, eliminating the need for external encoders for VFX shots.

On-Set Usage

The G30 is aimed at productions that require smooth and precise movement of heavy camera packages without the usual limitations of traditional heads. The rigid, shorter frame construction is intended to deliver smoother images, especially on extended cranes. According to the manufacturer, the oversized frame geometry makes counterweights unnecessary for large payloads.

  • Balancing/Setup: Indexing plungers allow individual axes to be locked independently during setup and secure the head during transport.
  • Operation: Supplied touch/dial console with a flat menu structure and physical controls for direct, tactile control of Pan, Tilt, and Roll.
  • Virtual Production: Integrated axis encoders provide tracking data without retooling.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
