Louver

Light-shaping tool with louvered or honeycomb grid in front of a lamp that controls spill and narrows the beam angle.

Overview

A louver (often called "Lamellenraster" or "Wabengitter" in German) is a light modifier that sits directly in front of the light-emitting surface of a fixture and passes light through a grid of louvers or cells. This blocks light rays emanating sideways and narrows the beam angle without altering the light's color or the source's fundamental characteristics. The louver is therefore purely a tool for light control, not for color correction.

The best-known type is the egg crate louver (Wabengitter, "egg carton"). The term "louver" is used for both rigid honeycomb attachments in front of spotlights and LED panels, and – in its soft/fabric variant (soft egg crate, grid) – for attachments in front of softboxes.

Function and Types

  • Egg Crate Louver (rigid): A grid of square cells; the deeper and narrower the cells, the stronger the restriction. Typically made of thin sheet steel with a black powder coating, it sits flat in front of the light and simultaneously suppresses distracting lens reflections.
  • Louvered Attachments on LED Lights: Rotatable louver attachments (e.g., as accessories for LED fixtures) create an elliptical light pattern; rotating the louvers allows the orientation of the pattern to be adjusted. Attachment is via magnetic/screw mount or a speed ring, depending on the manufacturer.
  • Soft Egg Crate / Grid: Fabric grid with Velcro, stretched in front of softboxes or planar soft sources to make their broad diffusion more directional.

Technical Data (Egg Crate Louver)

FunctionTrimming of spill light, narrowing of the beam, reduction of lens reflections

The dimensions and cut-off angle mentioned refer to the Egg Crate Louver series from City Theatrical; other manufacturers and designs may vary.

On-Set Use

On set, the louver often replaces a series of flags (toppers, bottomers, siders): instead of flagging the light from the outside with multiple flags, the grid limits the light emission directly at the source. This saves setup time and C-stands and prevents light from "spilling" onto walls, ceilings, or floors. The louver is particularly used with soft sources and LED panels to focus the beam and control spill when a subject needs to be lit precisely without overlap.
