Lee 203: A 1/4 CT Blue conversion gel by LEE Filters that mildly cools tungsten light (3200 K) toward daylight (Mired shift -35).

Overview

Lee 203 (product name "203 Quarter C.T. Blue", also 1/4 CTB) is a color correction lighting gel from the British manufacturer LEE Filters. It belongs to the CTB (Color Temperature Blue) series, used to adjust warm artificial light towards daylight. "Quarter" signifies a quarter of the correction strength of a full CTB gel (Lee 201); between full and quarter strength is also half CTB (Lee 202).

Lee 203 is primarily used when artificial light sources (Tungsten/Halogen) need only a slight cooling – for example, to match them more closely to daylight entering through a window, without using the full, clearly visible correction of a full CTB gel.

On-Set Use

Lee 203 is used as a cut sheet or from the roll, stretched directly in front of the light fixture or inserted into the gel frame. Due to its low correction strength, the light loss is comparatively small, around one-third to half a stop.

  • Slight cooling of Tungsten sources (Fresnels, open-face, Halogen) when full CTB would be too strong.
  • Fine-tuning artificial light to a daylight-like look, for instance, in mixed lighting situations with window light.
  • Subtle, cool accentuation of individual lights in relation to the rest of the set.

As with all lighting gels: maintain sufficient distance from hot fixtures, as polyester gels can deform or fade if overheated. For correction in the opposite direction – daylight to artificial light (orange) – the CTO series is used instead.
