Laowa

Laowa is the lens brand of Venus Optics from China — and on the rental shelf, it's the department for tasks that normal optics fail at. While established manufacturers build their series around classic focal length ranges, Laowa specifically seeks out the gaps in between: optics for which there is a concrete need on set, but no mass market. The result is a catalog that looks less like a lens series and more like a toolbox for special cases.

The Niches in Detail

The best-known piece is the 24mm Probe lens: a long, thin tube with the front element at the tip, waterproof at the front end, and with its own LED lighting. This allows the camera to move through scenes that no normal lens can enter — between bottles, into a clockwork mechanism, very close over a set table. Product shots and tabletop work have acquired their own visual language through this lens. In addition, there are extreme macro lenses that go significantly beyond the usual 1:1 magnification ratio, the Zero-D wide-angle lenses, whose design is optimized for minimal distortion — valuable for architecture and anywhere straight lines must remain straight — and with the Nanomorph series, compact, affordable anamorphic lenses for small cameras and gimbals.

Classification on Set

Laowa does not compete with ARRI-certified lens series for the A-camera spot in a major production — the optics are predominantly manual, without electronics, and manufacturing tolerances are a known issue. Their role is different: the one shot that wouldn't exist otherwise. For a day of shooting with a Probe lens, no one will rent a special construction for ten times the price if the shot can be achieved with a Laowa. This is precisely why they also appear on major productions — as a specialized tool alongside the main set, not as its replacement.

• Probe and macro shots require a lot of light: the small apertures and the long tube absorb more light than expected from the data sheet.
• For extreme macros, plan for a depth of field in the millimeter range — without a slider or focus rig, the shot won't work.
• Test the specific unit before the shooting day: with specialized optics, a check for centering and focus fall-off is more worthwhile than with mass-produced items from major manufacturers.
