American lighting manufacturer. Joker HMIs and Fresnels are production workhorses — intuitive controls, durable, reliable output. Industry standard on set.

Definition

K5600 refers to an American manufacturer of HMI and Tungsten lights, producing professional lighting systems for film, television, and photography since 1986. The company, based in Sun Valley, California, primarily develops Fresnel spotlights with power ratings from 200W to 18,000W, as well as specialized light shapers. The name K5600 refers to the Kelvin color temperature of 5600K, the daylight standard in film lighting.

Technical Details

K5600 HMI spotlights use metal halide lamps with electronic ballasts (ARRIMAX or proprietary K-ESTHER ballasts) and achieve luminous efficiencies of 85-95 lumens per watt. The popular Joker-Bug 200W produces 18,000 lumens at a weight of 1.3 kg, while the Alpha 1600W delivers 160,000 lumens. Characteristic features include compact, modular designs with removable Fresnel lenses and integrated DMX control. Newer LED models like the Joker2 offer stepless color temperature adjustment from 2500K to 6500K with CRI values above 95.

History & Development

Company founder Kees van Oosterom developed the first compact HMI spotlight in 1986 after moving from the Dutch film industry to Los Angeles. In 1992, the Joker 200W followed, offering HMI light in a handy form factor for the first time. In 2003, K5600 expanded its range to include Tungsten spotlights, and in 2018, LED technology. The Joker2 series, introduced in 2020, combines HMI, LED, and plasma technology in one housing.

Practical Use in Film

K5600 lights are preferably used for exterior shoots and mixed-lighting situations where a compact design and high light output are required. The Joker-Bug 800W established itself as a standard for car driving shots and tight shooting locations. Cinematographers use the precise light distribution of the Fresnel optics for targeted accentuation, while DMX integration allows seamless integration into modern lighting consoles. Disadvantages include the high purchase price and limited accessory compatibility with other manufacturers.

Comparison & Alternatives

K5600 primarily competes with ARRI (M-Series), Dedolight, and American manufacturers like Mole-Richardson. Compared to ARRI spotlights, K5600 offers more compact designs with comparable light output, but with proprietary accessory systems. LED alternatives from ARRI (SkyPanel), Aputure, or Quasar Science achieve similar flexibility with lower power consumption. K5600 Tungsten spotlights are mainly chosen when the characteristic light quality of classic incandescent lamps is desired.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
