Professional hydraulic camera dolly by Chapman/Leonard featuring a jib arm and three-mode steering system for tracking shots in film and television.
The Hustler is a professional, hydraulically operated camera dolly manufactured by US company Chapman/Leonard Studio Equipment (Hollywood, California). It is one of the most frequently used studio dollies in feature film and high-end TV production and has been released in several generations, including the Hustler IV and the current Hustler V from Chapman's 5 series.
A dolly is a mobile camera platform on which the camera is mounted, and which typically carries the operator and focus puller. The Hustler combines this mobile base with a hydraulic boom arm that can raise and lower the camera during a shot. This allows for combined tracking and lifting movements within a single unit.
The Hustler is operated by the Dolly Grip, who executes the tracking and lifting movements in consultation with the cinematographer and director. Typical applications include smooth push-ins and pull-outs, tracking shots alongside actors, and combinations of movement and height changes. When set up on track, the dolly delivers particularly smooth, repeatable moves; the crab and round steering allow for tight maneuvers and lateral repositioning without turning.
