Overview
Houdini is a 3D and visual effects software from Canadian manufacturer SideFX (Side Effects Software Inc.), based in Toronto. Unlike lighting or grip hardware on set, Houdini is purely a software tool for post-production or the VFX pipeline. Its characteristic feature is the procedural, node-based workflow: work steps are represented as networks of interconnected operators (nodes), allowing results to be built non-destructively, adjusted at any time, and shared as reusable setups.
Houdini is considered an industry standard for complex simulations and effects and is used by major film, TV, and game studios. The software was originally developed from SideFX's older PRISMS package.
Features
Houdini covers a broad spectrum of the 3D/VFX pipeline. Typical areas of application include:
- Dynamic Simulations (FX): Fire, smoke (Pyro), fluids, destruction, particles, as well as rigid and cloth simulations.
- Character FX: Hair, fur, and crowd simulations.
- Procedural Modeling: Generation of geometry, terrains, and environments through rule-based networks.
- Lighting, Look Development, and Rendering: via the USD-based Solaris tools and the included renderers Mantra and Karma.
- Pipeline and Task Management: via the Procedural Dependency Graph (PDG).
The software can be extended, among other things, through its proprietary scripting language VEX, as well as Python and C++. With Houdini Engine, Houdini tools can be integrated into other programs such as Maya, 3ds Max, Unreal Engine, and Unity.
Platforms and Licenses
Houdini runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. SideFX offers the software in several license tiers:
| License | Usage |
|---|
| Houdini FX / Core (Commercial) | commercial production (full or reduced feature set) |
| Houdini Indie | smaller commercial users with revenue limit |
| Education | training and teaching |
| Apprentice | free, for non-commercial purposes only |
Use in Productions
Houdini is primarily used where complex, physically accurate effects and large, procedurally generated environments are required. According to Wikipedia, the software has been used in Disney productions such as Frozen, Zootopia, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Wish, as well as in Rio.
