Green Spike

Narrow matte green tape used on set to mark positions for actors, cameras, and equipment on the ground.

Overview

"Green Spike" refers to green spike tape – a narrow marking tape used in set and stage practices. It is used to mark exact positions on the floor: positions for actors (so-called "marks"), camera positions, tripod legs, lighting stands, props, or furniture. This allows shots to be repeated reproducibly across multiple takes.

Spike tape is not adhesive tape for securing loads, but a pure marking tool. It is significantly narrower than classic gaffer tape, can be torn by hand, and removed without residue. Its matte surface does not reflect light, making it inconspicuous on camera.

Color Coding on Set

Spike tape is available in many colors, often in fluorescent tones. The color is typically used as a code: different colors mark different actors or elements, allowing marks on the floor to be clearly assigned. Green is one of the common standard colors in this system.

  • Distinguishing multiple actors (e.g., one color per person)
  • Separating camera, lighting, and prop marks
  • Good visibility on dark studio floors; fluorescent variants are also visible in low light

Distinction

"Green Spike" is not to be confused with greenscreen material or a lamp code. The term "Spike" here refers to the individual floor marking; "to spike" accordingly means to mark a position with tape.
