Full Plus Green

Color correction gel No. 244 that balances tungsten and daylight sources to match the green cast of fluorescent tubes.

Overview

Full Plus Green is a green color correction filter (light gel) with the industry-standard filter number 244. It is manufactured under the identical number by several manufacturers: as Lee 244 Full Plus Green, as Rosco E-Colour+ 244 Full Plus Green, and as the compatible Cotech 244 Full Tough Plus Green.

The filter adds a strong green component to a light fixture. Its purpose is to color-match tungsten or daylight sources (HMI, LED, incandescent lamps) to the characteristic green spike of fluorescent tubes and other discharge lamps, so that the added film light matches the existing practical lighting in the scene.

"Full" denotes the full strength. Weaker gradations of the same series (e.g., Half, Quarter, Eighth Plus Green) provide correspondingly reduced green content; a 1/2 Plus Green has approximately half the effect of Full Plus Green.

Technical Data

Filter Number244
FunctionGreen Correction (Plus Green / Window Green)
Camera Filter EquivalentNominal CC30 Green
Light Transmission (Rosco E-Colour 244)74.2 %
Light Loss (Rosco E-Colour 244)Approx. 0.4 stops

The light transmission values refer to the Rosco E-Colour specification; across manufacturers, the values are very close as it is the same filter specification (244). The filter is typically available as a sheet (e.g., 24" x 21") and as a roll (e.g., 48" x 25 ft / approx. 1.22 m x 7.62 m).

On-Set Usage

Full Plus Green is used when filming in a location lit by fluorescent tubes and supplementing with your own film lighting. If the film lighting (tungsten or HMI) is not corrected, it will appear too neutral or magenta-tinged compared to the tubes. With the Plus Green gel, the film lighting is shifted into the same green range, allowing the entire scene to be cleanly neutralized in-camera or in post with a single Minus Green correction (magenta).

Full Plus Green is often combined with a CTO (Color Temperature Orange) to simultaneously adjust color temperature and green content to match the specific fluorescent tube. The counterpart is the Minus Green filter (magenta), which removes excess green from the image.

The gel is placed in front of the light source as usual: in the filter frame, clamped to the barndoors, or as a cut sheet in front of the diffusion. As it is a heat-sensitive polyester gel, sufficient distance from hot tungsten sources must be maintained.
