Magenta correction gel that removes green cast from fluorescent, discharge, and budget LED sources (approx. CC30 magenta).

Overview

"Full Minus Green" (also "Full Minusgreen") is a magenta-colored correction filter (gel) that is stretched in front of a light source to compensate for the green cast from fluorescent tubes, discharge lamps, and many inexpensive LED lights. Such sources have a green peak in their spectrum, which appears as an unpleasant green veil on film and sensor; the magenta of the filter is the complementary color to green and neutralizes this cast. "Full" denotes the full correction strength; in addition, partial strengths (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) exist for weaker green components.

The filter is not a single manufacturer's product but a standardized correction class offered by several manufacturers with nearly identical effects. Common codes are LEE 247 or Rosco E-Colour 247 ("Full Minus Green"), as well as Rosco Cinegel 3308 ("Tough Minusgreen") with a more heat-resistant, deep-dyed base.

Technical Data

The correction strength for all "Full" variants nominally corresponds to a CC30 magenta camera filter. The values vary slightly depending on the product line:

ProductCodeCorrection EquivalentTransmissionLight Loss
LEE / Rosco E-Colour Full Minus Green247approx. CC30 Magenta59.1 %approx. 0.8 stops
Rosco Cinegel Tough Minusgreen3308approx. CC30 Magenta55 %approx. 0.9 stops

Available forms are typically sheets (e.g., 21" x 24" or approx. 0.53 m x 0.61 m) and rolls (e.g., 48" x 25 ft or approx. 1.22 m x 7.62 m). The Cinegel series uses a deep-dyed, heat-resistant polymer base for use close to hot lights.

On-Set Usage

  • Correction of US Cool White and daylight fluorescent tubes, as well as industrial discharge lamps that exhibit a green peak.
  • Removal of the green component from inexpensive LED sources with poor spectrum or low CRI.
  • Matching practical lights and existing overhead lighting to the rest of the lighting setup to achieve a consistent white point.

Since the filter costs approximately one stop of light, it is often placed directly on the source (e.g., as a sleeve over fluorescent tubes) or stretched in frames in front of the fixture. If "Full" correction is too strong, partial strengths are used; the counterpart "Plus Green" (green) is used to match daylight or artificial light sources to existing fluorescent light.
