Full CTS (Color Temperature Straw): Rosco color correction gel that shifts daylight toward tungsten (5500 K to ~2900 K, Mired shift +160)—the yellower, less red variant of Full CTO.

Overview

Full CTS (Color Temperature Straw) is a conversion filter (color correction gel) from Rosco's Straw series. It lowers the color temperature of a daylight source towards artificial light/tungsten. "Full" indicates the full correction strength; the series is also available in graduated strengths of 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8.

CTS is closely related to the better-known CTO (Color Temperature Orange) series and provides a comparable reduction in color temperature, but appears more yellow and less red/orange. Rosco introduced the Straw series in 1992 at the request of cinematographers who wanted a less red alternative to CTO – for example, to create warm light without skin tones appearing too reddish.

Technical Data

Full CTS is offered by Rosco in two product systems: as Cinegel #3441 (US market) and as E-Colour+ #441 "Full Straw" (European range). Both denote the same full straw correction.

CharacteristicSpecification
Filter TypeConversion Filter (Color Correction), does not cool – warms the light
EffectDaylight → Artificial Light: 5500 K to approx. 2900 K (according to Rosco datasheet), with a slight yellow cast
Mired Shift+160 (CTS) vs. approx. +167 (CTO)
Rosco CodesCinegel #3441 / E-Colour+ #441
TransmissionE-Colour+ #441: 57.3%; Cinegel #3441: approx. 50% (equivalent to approx. 1/2 stop light loss)
Series GradationsFull, 1/2 (#3442 / #442), 1/4 (#3443 / #443), 1/8 (#3444 / #444)

The conversion from 5500 K to approximately 2900 K stated in the datasheet corresponds to the Mired shift of +160. In Rosco's nominal product description of the E-Colour series, the effect is advertised as "Daylight to Tungsten 3200 K with a slight yellow cast"; however, the measured target value is around 2900 K. The weaker gradations reduce the color temperature less drastically.

Set Application

Full CTS is typically used to match daylight-balanced sources (HMI, LED in daylight mode, natural light through windows) to an artificial light environment or to intentionally warm them. Compared to Full CTO, the result is yellower rather than orange – useful when a warm look is desired without a strong red cast, for example, with skin tones or to imitate incandescent lamp/sunlight moods.

  • Placed in front of luminaires (gel frame, filter clips) or as roll stock on windows.
  • Like all filters, sensitive to heat: ensure sufficient distance from the light source and ventilation; otherwise, the material will burn with hot tungsten sources.
  • Can be fine-tuned with the 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 grades to precisely match mixed lighting situations.
