Frame Remapping

Frame Remapping is a Tessera software feature by Brompton Technology enabling multiple genlock-synchronized cameras to simultaneously capture different content on the same LED wall.

Overview

Frame Remapping is a software feature of LED processors from Brompton Technology, placing it within the realm of Virtual Production / LED Volumes, rather than traditional lighting technology. This feature allows multiple cameras to capture different image content on the *same* LED wall simultaneously. Frame Remapping thus solves a core problem of In-Camera VFX (ICVFX): with traditional camera tracking, the perspective of the virtual background is only rendered correctly for a single camera position. Frame Remapping enables each camera to be assigned its own perspective-matched image.

Functionality

The technical basis is so-called frame rate multiplication: the LED wall is driven at a multiple of the incoming frame rate. Different areas of the video raster or solid color frames can be inserted into the additionally generated frames. Each camera is synchronized via Genlock and operated with a suitable phase offset (shutter phase) so that it specifically exposes only "its" frame.

In addition to multiple camera perspectives, solid color frames can also be inserted in this way:

  • Black Frames (Black Frame Insertion) for reducing motion blur.
  • Green or Blue Frames to simultaneously capture the virtual background and a greenscreen/bluescreen for subsequent keying in post-production.

On-Set Usage

Frame Remapping is used on LED Volumes for multi-camera shoots where previously only one camera could effectively utilize the perspective-correct background. According to Brompton, the feature adds only two frames of end-to-end latency (one frame in Ultra-Low-Latency mode). The complementary Tessera feature ShutterSync can be used in conjunction with Frame Remapping to avoid scanline artifacts with differing shutter times.
