The verbal warning called out immediately before igniting a pyrotechnic effect. Once called, no one moves within the blast zone.
"Fire in the hole" is a warning call from the explosives industry, adopted in filmmaking as the final announcement before detonation. It is directed at everyone who cannot hear radio communication – the neighborhood, passersby, and anyone not currently on the designated channel.
When it is used
After clearance from the pyrotechnician, after confirmation of all positions, immediately before triggering. It is shouted loudly and relayed, not broadcast. After this, the effect occurs.
What it achieves
It is the last opportunity to abort. Anyone who sees something wrong after the call shouts Stop – and the effect will not be detonated, regardless of the cost. In German-speaking regions, warnings are usually given in German; the function is the same.
