Fire Safety Officer on set: inspects builds and escape routes, keeps extinguishers on hand, and stations a fire watch for permitted pyrotechnic or special effects.
The Fire Safety Officer is mandatory for shoots involving fire, pyrotechnics, or in special constructions. For effects requiring permits, the fire safety watch is often provided directly by the fire department.
What is checked
- Escape and Evacuation Routes — clear, marked, sufficiently wide. The most common violation on set: blocked exits.
- Constructions and Materials — sets and decorations must be flame-retardant depending on the location; corresponding certifications belong to the construction.
- Extinguishing Agents — appropriate in number and type for the fire class, within reach, and tested.
- Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarm Systems — registered and deactivated when fog is used, not taped over.
The Authority
They can stop the shoot. This is not a formality: if a fire watch does not approve an effect, it will not take place — regardless of its cost.
