DYS: ANSI lamp code for 600W/120V halogen bulb (3200K, GZ9.5 base), also known as DYS/DYV/BHC.

Overview

DYS is an ANSI lamp code (a three-letter code from the American National Standards Institute) for a specific tungsten-halogen incandescent lamp. The code does not describe a manufacturer but a standardized lamp type: any lamp with the code DYS is electrically and mechanically interchangeable, regardless of the manufacturer such as GE, Osram/Sylvania, Ushio, or Eiko.

In practice, the DYS is usually listed as a combined code DYS/DYV/BHC. These three ANSI codes designate largely identical or interchangeable 600W lamps, which is why retailers list them together.

It is a single-ended halogen lamp, typically used in open-face lights and compact 600-watt studio fixtures.

Technical Data

The following values are consistently stated across multiple manufacturer and retailer sources:

CharacteristicValue
ANSI CodeDYS (often DYS/DYV/BHC)
Wattage600 W
Voltage120 V
Color Temperature3200 K (Tungsten/Artificial Light)
BaseGZ9.5 (2-Pin Prefocus)
FilamentCC-6
Bulb ShapeT6 / G7
Luminous Fluxapprox. 17,000–17,500 lumens
Rated Lifeapprox. 75 hours
Max. Overall Length (MOL)approx. 63 mm (2.5 in)

The lamp operates at 120 V, making it primarily designed for North American mains operation or for corresponding fixtures.

Set Usage

The DYS serves as a light source in several common 600W film and video lights. Frequently mentioned compatible fixtures include:

  • Lowel Omni-Light
  • Arri Arrilite 600
  • Mole-Richardson "Teenie-Weenie" (Type 4031, 600 W)

At 3200 K, the lamp provides classic tungsten artificial light and can therefore be mixed with other halogen sources without correction; for daylight scenes, CTB correction is needed. The relatively short rated life of around 75 hours is typical for halogen studio lamps and should be considered in spare parts planning. As with all halogen lamps, do not touch with bare hands, as skin oils on the quartz envelope can lead to premature failure.
