Dome Diffuser

Dome-shaped diffuser attachment that transforms a COB or point source into omnidirectional soft light, creating a bare-bulb or lantern effect.

Overview

A Dome Diffuser (also referred to as a Diffusion Dome or Diffuser Dome) is a dome-shaped or hemispherical light modifier that is attached directly over the reflector or light head of a point light source. It belongs to the category of softening modifiers (grip/lighting accessories) and is typically used on COB LED continuous lights or speedlights/battery-powered strobes. Instead of focusing light in one direction like a softbox, the dome diffuses the point source broadly and omnidirectionally, creating a wide, soft light effect reminiscent of a bare bulb or a lantern.

The term does not refer to a specific brand but rather a category of accessories from multiple manufacturers. Common examples include the NEEWER CRS8 for the MS60/MS150 COB lights and the Godox ML-CD15, which, with included adapters, fits numerous Godox heads (including AD300 Pro, AD400 Pro, ML60, V1).

How it Works

The translucent dome replaces the directional output of the bare head with omnidirectional diffusion:

  • Omnidirectional Diffusion: When fully attached, domes emit light over a very wide angle – manufacturers advertise this as 360° output, which illuminates the surrounding area and reduces harsh shadows.
  • Variable Output: Some models (e.g., Godox ML-CD15) can be collapsed at the rear to limit the output to approximately 180°, or covered at the front to alter the light's character.
  • Material: Common versions are made of soft, heat-resistant silicone; they are flexible, foldable, and can be attached without tools.
  • Light Loss: Like all diffusion, the dome causes a loss of brightness as light is scattered and partially emitted backward.

On-Set Usage

Dome diffusers serve as a compact, quick solution for soft ambient light – for example, in interviews, portraits, product shots, or as fill light in confined setups where a full softbox or lantern would be too bulky. Due to their omnidirectional diffusion, they are also suitable for simulating a visible light source (like a practical light) in the frame or for creating a lantern-like accent. The pure dome diffuser differs from the classic Light Dome (a rigid, dome-shaped softbox that directs light forward) by its significantly wider, undirected light spread.
