DJI developed the Ronin-S in 2018 as its first one-handed gimbal. In 2020, it was renamed "DJI RS" with the RS 2 and carbon fiber construction. The RS 3 (2022) introduced automated axis locking, and the RS 3 Pro additionally features LiDAR tracking.
DoPs use DJI RS systems for Steadicam-like movements without the cost and complexity of traditional systems. Typical applications include dolly shots, where the gimbal is mounted on tracks or vehicles, as well as handheld follow shots in confined spaces. The ActiveTrack function allows for autonomous tracking of actors, enabling the operator to focus on composition. In TV production, pre-programmed movement patterns (TimeLapse, Panorama) speed up repetitive shots. The RS Force technology translates operator movements into smooth camera movements, eliminating micro-jitters.
Compared to the Zhiyun Crane, the DJI RS offers more precise motor control and better app integration, but costs 20-30% more. Traditional Steadicam systems allow for higher payloads (up to 18 kg) and longer recording times, but require extensive training and physical conditioning. For heavy-duty productions with an Alexa LF or RED V-Raptor, the DJI Ronin 4D or Freefly MoVI Pro remains the better choice. Cable cam systems outperform handheld gimbals for extreme movements, while a traditional tripod head is more efficient for static shots.
The DJI RS series continues to evolve: With the DJI RS 5 Combo, DJI introduced a new premium gimbal in 2026 aimed at professional videographers and filmmakers. In parallel, the DJI RS 2 is establishing itself as a proven solution when compared with competing products like the Zhiyun Crane 4, particularly impressing with its smooth motion control and inertial follow mode. Ich kann spontane Dialoge oder Improvisationen einfangen, da der Gimbal reaktionsschnell genug ist, um unvorhersehbare Bewegungen zu verfolgen. Die vorprogrammierten Bewegungsabläufe helfen bei der Konsistenz von Establishing Shots über mehrere Takes hinweg.
Mit 1.200 Euro kostet ein DJI RS 3 etwa ein Zehntel einer traditionellen Steadicam-Lösung und eliminiert die Notwendigkeit eines spezialisierten Operators – jeder erfahrene Kameraassistent kann es bedienen. Die 12-Stunden-Akkulaufzeit deckt einen kompletten Drehtag ab, während der Transport im Standard-Pelican-Case die Logistik vereinfacht.
