Digital Sputnik DS3: Compact LED panel with 576 LEDs (RGBWW), 18,000 lumens, CRI 95+, V-Mount battery; ideal for location film and photo production.

Technical Details

The DS3 uses 576 individual LEDs (192 warm white, 192 cool white, 96 red, 96 green, 96 blue) in a 22cm diameter panel. The light output is 18,000 lumens at maximum power, with a CRI of 95+. The unit weighs 3.2kg and features an integrated V-Mount battery adapter as well as an AC power supply (100-240V). The beam spread is 120° without accessories, reducible to 60° or directional light using honeycomb grids or barn doors.

History & Development

Digital Sputnik introduced the DS series in 2015, with the DS3 appearing in 2018 as the successor to the DS1 and DS2. The Ukrainian company specialized in compact LED panels for the film and photography industry. In 2020, the DS3 received a firmware update with expanded effect modes and improved app integration. Production was relocated to Poland in 2022 due to war, and further development is handled by distributors in Europe and the USA.

Practical Use in Film

The DS3 is particularly suitable for run-and-gun shoots and documentary work where quick setup times are crucial. Cinematographers often use it as a practical light in scenes or as background illumination for interviews. The RGB functionality allows for mood lighting without gel filters – such as blue moonlight through windows or warm fireplace ambiance. For night shoots, the DS3 serves as a mobile filler, as it can be operated for two hours at half power without external power.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the ARRI SkyPanel S30-C, the DS3 offers more mobility with lower light output (18,000 vs. 9,400 lumens). As an alternative to the Aputure MC, the DS3 is suitable for larger areas but is less portable. Its successor, the DS6, doubles the light output but weighs 5.8kg. For pure daylight applications, dedicated bi-color LEDs like the Quasar Q-LED are often more efficient as they don't carry RGB chips for special effects.

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
