Canon Cine Lens: professional cinema optics with T1.3–T4.4 aperture, 300° focus rings, 0.8 mod gears for follow focus. Prime series 14–135mm, zoom lenses with optical stabilization, Sumire line optimized for warm skin tones.

Technical Details

The Canon CN-E series includes prime lenses from 14mm to 135mm with constant T1.5 to T3.1 apertures. Zoom lenses such as the CN-E 18-80mm T4.4 L IS or CN-E 70-200mm T4.4 L IS offer consistently constant aperture values. All lenses feature 300° focus rings for precise manual focusing and 0.8 pitch gear rings for follow focus systems. The Sumire Prime series (PL-Mount) achieves T1.3 aperture at 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm focal lengths with special coating for warm skin tones.

History & Development

Canon launched its first Cinema EOS lens, the CN-E 24-105mm T4 L IS, in 2012, parallel to the C300 camera. In 2014, the first prime lenses, CN-E 20mm, 50mm, and 85mm T1.3 L F, followed. The Compact-Servo series was created in 2016 for documentary productions with focal lengths up to 1000mm. In 2019, Canon introduced the Sumire Prime series as a response to ARRI Signature Primes, and in 2021, the Flex Zoom series expanded the offering with variable focal lengths at T2.95 aperture.

Practical Use in Film

Roger Deakins used Canon CN-E lenses for "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), combined with ARRI Alexa cameras via PL adapters. The Compact-Servo lenses became established in documentaries like "Free Solo" (2018) due to their image stabilization and 20x zoom range. Netflix productions frequently use the CN-E Prime series for their 4K resolution and consistent color matching across different focal lengths.

Comparison & Alternatives

Canon Cine lenses compete directly with Zeiss CP.3, ARRI Signature Primes, and Cooke S4/i lenses. Compared to still photography lenses, they offer constant T-stops, eliminated focus breathing, and uniform housing sizes for quick lens changes. The Sumire Prime series is positioned price-wise between Zeiss CP.3 (more affordable) and Cooke S7/i (more expensive) with comparable optical quality. For Canon Cinema cameras (C70, C300 Mark III, C500 Mark II), the native RF-Mount allows direct connection without an adapter.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
