Candle Effect

Preset lighting effect mode in modern LED fixtures that simulates the warm, irregular flicker of a candlelight.

Overview

The Candle Effect is not a standalone device but a pre-programmed lighting effect mode integrated into modern LED fixtures. It simulates the warm, flickering movement of a candle flame: a low, continuously fluctuating brightness combined with a warm color characteristic. This allows for convincingly motivated candlelight on set without the need for open flames.

The effect belongs to the family of Lighting Effects (Lighting FX), which many manufacturers deliver as a set of fixed presets. At ARRI, "Candle" is one of 17 pre-programmed effects (e.g., SkyPanel and Orbiter); at Aputure, "Candle" is one of the effects in the Nova panel series. Before the widespread adoption of these built-in effects, comparable flicker looks had to be created using external flicker boxes or manually programmed DMX sequences.

Functionality and Parameters

The effect primarily modulates the intensity over time (and slightly the color, depending on the fixture) to replicate the random movement of a flame. Across manufacturers, each effect typically has several adjustable parameters that allow the look to be adapted to the scene. Typically adjustable are:

  • Base brightness / intensity of the effect
  • Speed or rate of flicker
  • Strength or depth of brightness fluctuation
  • Color setting via the respective color mode of the device (e.g., CCT/color temperature or HSI)

Since the effect runs within the regular color modes of the fixture, the warm tone can be set via color temperature or HSI control, rather than through hardwired values. Specific numerical presets vary depending on the manufacturer, model, and firmware.

On-Set Application

Depending on the device, the Candle Effect is operated via the fixture's on-board menu, the manufacturer's app, or via DMX/lighting console, allowing multiple fixtures to run synchronously or with an offset. Typical applications include:

  • Motivated candle or lantern light in period and interior scenes
  • Supplementing practical candles in the frame, whose real luminosity is often insufficient for exposure
  • Mood and background lighting with a restless, organic character

In practice, the effect is often combined with diffusion and tight light shaping emanating from the visual source (candle, lamp, fire) to ensure the direction and quality of the light match the visible source.
