Firework Effect

Pre-programmed light effect on RGB-LED fixtures that simulates the flickering, multicolored bursts of fireworks across a subject.

Overview

The Firework Effect (also known as "Fireworks", German: "Feuerwerk-Effekt") is not an independent device, but a pre-programmed lighting effect (FX preset) within the effect engine of modern color-mixing LED lights for film and TV. It simulates the characteristic play of light of fireworks: irregularly appearing bursts of light flashing in various colors, which illuminate quickly and fade away. This allows the fixture to create the impression that a subject or set is illuminated by the reflection of fireworks taking place off-screen – without the need for actual pyrotechnics.

The effect belongs to the same family of stock effects as Lightning, Paparazzi, TV, Fire, Police/Cop Car, Explosion, or Welding. These effects can be accessed directly on the device or via DMX, without requiring a lighting console and manual programming.

Availability and Manufacturers

The Firework effect is a standard feature across several manufacturers:

  • ARRI lists "Fireworks" on the SkyPanel as one of 17 pre-programmed Lighting Effects. The Orbiter also features an Effects mode, whose effect library includes the Fireworks effect.
  • Nanlite lists "Firework" as its own special effect mode, including on its PavoTube tubes.
  • Astera offers customizable effect presets on its wireless LED lights; the set of effects varies depending on the model.
  • Rotolight reproduces comparable practical effects through its CineSFX system.

Since the effect is generated purely in the fixture's firmware/control, the designation, color palette, and parameters depend on the respective manufacturer and firmware version.

Parameters and Control

The effect is typically customizable. Common parameters that recur across manufacturers include:

  • Speed / Frequency – how often the light bursts occur.
  • Color / Color Palette – the colors of individual "bursts" (freely selectable for RGB/RGBWW lights).
  • Intensity – base brightness or peak brightness of the bursts.

The effect is accessed either via the fixture's control menu (standalone), via app or wireless (e.g., CRMX), or via DMX. When multiple lights are connected, the effect can span across several devices, allowing the light bursts to "travel" across a series of panels.

Use on Set

The Firework effect is used to credibly motivate off-screen events: New Year's Eve and holiday scenes, celebration scenes viewed through a window, or reflected light on faces, without real pyrotechnics, permits, or weather dependency. Since the effect is software-based, it can be repeated precisely (for continuity across multiple takes) and adjusted in brightness, tempo, and color to suit the scene. In practice, it is often placed on color-mixing panels or tubes behind or beside the set and used subtly, so that the flicker appears as a realistic reflection rather than an artificial disco pattern.
