BBA is the ANSI lamp code for a 250-W photoflood lamp with 3400 K color temperature, A21 bulb, and E26 base.
"BBA" is not a manufacturer or a device type, but an ANSI lamp code – a standardized three-letter identifier that uniquely describes a specific light source across manufacturers. Behind the code BBA stands a classic photoflood lamp: an incandescent lamp with a tungsten filament, intended as a continuous light source for photo, film, and video lighting. The same lamp is offered by several manufacturers under the identical code, including Ushio, OSRAM/Sylvania, Eiko/Wiko, and GE.
Characteristic of photoflood lamps like the BBA is the filament operated under overload: the filament operates at a significantly higher temperature than in a normal household lamp. This provides high luminous efficacy and a defined, warm color temperature – but at the cost of a very short lifespan.
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| ANSI Code | BBA |
| Wattage | 250 W |
| Voltage | approx. 118–120 V |
| Color Temperature | 3400 K (Tungsten, warm white) |
| Base | E26 Medium (Screw base) |
| Bulb Shape | A21 (A-shape) |
| Finish | frosted |
The values are consistent across the data sheets of several manufacturers (Ushio, OSRAM/Sylvania, Eiko, GE). According to manufacturer specifications, the luminous flux is in the range of approximately 8500–8700 lumens; the exact figure varies by manufacturer, which is why it should be understood as an approximation. The lifespan is very short – photoflood lamps rarely last more than a few hours, which directly follows from the overloaded operation of the filament.
Note: A variant for 240-V mains (approx. 275 W, B22d bayonet base) also exists under the same BBA code; however, the version common and standard in English-speaking regions is the 250-W lamp with an E26 base.
At 3400 K, the BBA falls within the classic tungsten range (though slightly higher than the studio standard of 3200 K) and can therefore be mixed with other artificial light sources. 3400 K photofloods were historically common as set lighting, but on professional sets today, they have largely been replaced by fresnels, HMIs, and LEDs.
A relevant niche remains their use as practicals: when a light source visible in the shot – such as a table or floor lamp – needs to be significantly illuminated even under the surrounding set lighting, a photoflood lamp like the BBA provides the necessary visible glow thanks to its high output, where a normal household bulb would be washed out in the image.
