BB&S Area 48: LED panel with 576 individually addressable LEDs, 48×48 cm, CRI 95+, flicker-free dimming to 25,000 fps, DMX control.

Technical Details

The panel operates with 576 individually controllable LEDs and achieves a CRI value of 95+ and a TLCI value of 97. The color temperature can be continuously adjusted, while dimming from 0-100% is flicker-free up to a frame rate of 25,000 fps. The anodized aluminum housing weighs 4.2 kg and features DMX512 control as well as local controls. Variants include the Area 24 (24×24 cm) and Area 72 (72×72 cm), as well as the Area 48 Soft with an integrated diffuser.

History & Development

BB&S introduced the Area series in 2019 in response to the growing demand for compact, high-performance LED panels. The Area 48 quickly established itself as a standard for mobile productions and interviews. In 2021, the revised Version II followed with improved color rendering and reduced power consumption. The current Generation III from 2023 integrates Wireless DMX and expanded effect modes.

Practical Use in Film

In "The Batman" (2022), cinematographer Greig Fraser used Area 48 panels as practical light sources in vehicle scenes, disguised as dashboard lighting. In interview setups, the Area 48 often functions as a key light for close-ups or as a controlled fill light. The low power consumption allows for battery operation for up to four hours with V-mount batteries. The panel is particularly suitable for run-and-gun productions, as it is ready for use in 30 seconds and requires no warm-up time.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the ARRI SkyPanel S30-C, the Area 48 offers a more compact design with comparable light output, but without the advanced effect modes of the ARRI fixture. The Litepanels Gemini 2×1 Soft achieves similar specifications but requires an external ballast. The Aputure Nova P300c is positioned as a budget alternative, but compromises on color accuracy. For larger lighting surfaces with similar portability, the Quasar Science Q-LED X CrossFade is suitable, but it is exclusively controllable via app.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
