Compact battery-powered LED panel by Astera featuring 576 RGBW LEDs, 1,750K–20,000K color temperature, and 2.5h runtime at 60W; ideal for practicals and vehicle lighting.

Technical Details

The HydraPanel measures 300 × 300 × 43 mm and weighs 2.1 kg, including its lithium-ion battery. Its 576 RGBW LEDs cover a color temperature range from 1,750K to 20,000K and enable HSI color mixing across the entire color gamut. At maximum output (60 watts), the battery life is 2.5 hours, and at 25% power, it lasts up to 20 hours. The panel offers a beam angle of 65° and is IP65 rated for dust and splash protection. The AsteraApp allows for DMX-free control via Bluetooth for up to 50 devices simultaneously.

History & Development

Astera LED Technology launched the HydraPanel in 2019 as an evolution of their successful Titan Tube series. The German company from Munich developed the panel in response to the growing demand for compact, battery-powered flat lights for remote shoots. In 2021, the larger SuperPanel followed, offering double the light output. The integration of wireless DMX and the AsteraBox for expanded control options established the system as a standard in the film industry.

Practical Application in Film

HydraPanels are typically used as practical lights inside vehicles, where their shallow depth and battery operation offer significant advantages. During night shoots, they serve as eye lights or fill lights for close-ups. The RGB functionality allows for colored light accents without gels – such as blue moonlight through windows or warm candlelight simulation. The panel can be mounted via a standard spigot mount or magnetically attached to metal surfaces. The waterproof construction permits outdoor use in adverse weather conditions.

Comparison & Alternatives

Competitor products like the Litepanels Gemini or ARRI SkyPanel S30-C offer similar functionality but require external power. The Aputure MC is more compact but delivers only 1/10 of the light output. Quasar Science Rainbow or Astera Titan Tubes are better suited for linear lighting, while the HydraPanel is preferred for spot illumination. For larger areas, the Astera SuperPanel (60 × 30 cm) is the logical extension, and for mobile applications, the smaller NYX Bulb is the more economical alternative.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
