ARRI Large Format cinema camera with ALEV IV sensor, dual ISO 800/3200, weighing 3.9 kg, recording up to 4.5K ARRIRAW on CFexpress cards.

Technical Details

The ALEV IV sensor operates with dual native ISO sensitivity of 800/3200 ASA and achieves frame rates up to 90 fps in 4.5K Open Gate and 120 fps in UHD. The camera body weighs 3.9 kg without a lens and processes signals via 12G-SDI and USB-C interfaces. Internal recording is in ARRIRAW (up to 1.7 GB/s) or ProRes formats onto CFexpress Type B cards. The new ARRI Look Generator enables real-time LUT application directly within the camera system with advanced color science tools.

History & Development

ARRI first introduced the DNA LF at NAB 2023, after its predecessor, the ALEXA LF, had dominated the large format market since 2018. Development began in 2021 with the goal of integrating ARRI's proven ALEXA color science into a more compact, cost-effective platform. The market launch occurred in October 2023, coinciding with the introduction of the DNA product family, which established ARRI's modular approach for various production budgets.

Practical Use in Film

The DNA LF is primarily used in independent productions and mid-range budgets where ALEXA 35 systems are too cost-prohibitive. Directors of Photography utilize the large format sensor for characteristic bokeh effects and expanded wide-angle perspectives without a crop factor. In the series "The Crown" (Season 6, 2023), its compact design enabled handheld sequences that would have been logistically problematic with larger systems. The real-time HDR pipeline significantly shortens post-production workflows.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the ALEXA 35, the DNA LF offers 80% of the functionality at 60% of the cost, but omits 6K recording and advanced metadata features. Positioned as a direct competitor to the RED V-RAPTOR, the DNA LF boasts superior color science but lower resolution. The Sony VENICE 2 offers comparable large format performance, but with a different color characteristic and higher weight (4.7 kg vs. 3.9 kg).

From the crafts

Perspectives

Cinematographer
