30 Degree Rule

Murnau AI illustration

Minimum camera angle shift between cuts — less than 30° creates jump cuts that disorient viewers. Beyond 30°, the cut reads clean and intentional.

Description

I already pay attention during shooting to ensure my camera positions adhere to the 30 Degree Rule, so that the editor has sufficient material later. In multi-camera setups, I precisely plan the angles to avoid jump cuts while simultaneously creating interesting visual transitions. The 30 Degree Rule is a technique in film production. A term from film editing.

Application

For me, the 30 Degree Rule is a tool to guide the viewer's attention without distracting them. I consciously use it for fluid storytelling, but intentionally break it when I want to create unease or disorientation. This rule saves me time and money in post-production, as it prevents problematic cuts from the outset. I ensure my teams master these fundamentals to avoid costly reshoot appointments.
