Technical Details

Resolution is divided into two measurable phases: the falling action (2-8 minutes in feature films) shows the immediate consequences of the climax, while the dénouement (1-3 minutes) establishes the final state. In 90-minute films, resolution typically begins around minute 82-85. Structurally, a distinction is made between closed resolution (all questions answered), semi-open resolution (main conflict resolved, subplots open), and open resolution (intentionally incomplete solution).

History & Development

In 1863, Gustav Freytag codified the five-act structure, including "falling action," with his Pyramid of Drama. From 1908 onwards, D.W. Griffith systematically transferred these principles to film. In 1979, Syd Field established the three-act model with a specific resolution phase for Hollywood in his "Screenplay" manual. Since the 1990s, filmmakers have increasingly experimented with fragmented or circular resolution structures.

Practical Application in Film

"Casablanca" (1942) demonstrates classic closed resolution: Rick's decision at the airfield is followed by consequences (Louis' transformation) and an outlook (joint fight). "The Sopranos" (2007) used an abrupt cut to black as a radical anti-resolution. Marvel films use post-credit scenes as an extended resolution phase for franchise continuity. Horror films often employ false resolutions with a final "scare" to destabilize the achieved sense of security.

Comparison & Alternatives

Resolution differs from the climax by the absence of dramatic tension and from the setup by its retrospective rather than forward-looking character. The French term "dénouement" emphasizes the "unraveling" of complex plot threads more strongly. Modern series use cliffhangers as anti-resolutions to retain viewer engagement. Anthology formats like "Black Mirror" require complete episodic resolutions without overarching continuity.
