Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera with 25.2MP sensor, internal ProRes recording, and 5.7K Open Gate capture up to 30fps.

Technical Details

The 25.2MP Live MOS sensor without a low-pass filter achieves a native ISO sensitivity of 100-12,800 (expandable to 25,600). The Venus Engine image processor enables internal recording of ProRes 422 HQ and Apple ProRes 422. 5.7K Open Gate recording (5728×4320) at 30fps, as well as 4K DCI (4096×2160) and UHD (3840×2160) at up to 120fps, are available. The 3.0" vari-angle LCD monitor has a resolution of 1.840k dots, while the 0.74x OLED viewfinder offers 3.680k dots. Dual card slots (CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II) allow for parallel or sequential recording. The camera supports V-Log with 13+ stops of dynamic range.

History & Development

Panasonic introduced the GH6 in February 2022 as the successor to the GH5 from 2017. Development focused on higher resolutions and frame rates based on feedback from documentary filmmakers and content creators. As the first Micro Four Thirds camera with integrated ProRes recording, it marked a turning point for professional video work in a compact format. Firmware updates 2.0 and 2.1 added 32-bit float audio recording and extended streaming capabilities.

Practical Use in Filmmaking

Documentary filmmakers utilize the GH6 for its compact design while maintaining professional video quality, especially in run-and-gun productions. Internal ProRes recording eliminates the need for external recorders for color grading workflows. Wildlife photographers benefit from the 2x crop factor for longer focal lengths with less weight. The Dual Native ISO sensor (ISO 100 and 800) significantly reduces noise in low-light shots. Livestreamers use the USB streaming function for high-quality broadcasts without capture cards.

Comparison & Alternatives

The GH6 is positioned between consumer cameras and cinema cameras like the Sony FX3 (Full-frame, €4200) or Canon C70 (Super35, €5500). The Micro Four Thirds sensor offers greater depth of field than full-frame while using more compact lenses. A direct competitor is the OM System OM-1, which is primarily designed for photography. For pure video production, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro offers similar features in a cinema-oriented design. The GH6 is ideally suited for hybrid photo-video workflows and mobile productions with professional quality demands.
