The Litepanels Gemini is a modular RGB LED panel system characterized by high color flexibility and precise color reproduction. Unlike simple color temperature panels with fixed white LEDs, the RGB architecture allows for the creation of any hue within an extended color gamut. The different variants (Hard, Soft, RGBWW) offer flexibility for various cinematic requirements, from set blending to color grading visualization.

History & Development

Litepanels developed the Gemini system in response to the growing demand for RGB LED technology in film production starting in 2016. The first generation appeared in 2018, followed by the improved 1x1 Soft variant in 2019 and the more compact Gemini 1x1 Hard Panel in 2020. The system emerged from Litepanels' acquisition by Vitec in 2011 and its merger with their existing LED expertise. In 2021, Litepanels introduced the Gemini 2x1 Soft RGBWW, which additionally integrates cool white LEDs, expanding the color gamut to 120% of the Rec.709 standard.

Practical Use in Film

Gemini panels are particularly suitable for on-set color grading, as they can adjust light colors in real-time to match different camera profiles. In "The Mandalorian" (2019-2022), Gemini panels were used to simulate hyperspace light, while Marvel Studios utilizes them for superhero VFX setups to anticipate later CGI effects. The system allows for rapid lighting changes without gel swaps, thereby reducing setup times by up to 40%. The Soft variants, thanks to their diffusion technology, produce direct, soft light without additional modifiers.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to ARRI SkyPanels, the Gemini offers more compact dimensions with lower maximum light output but surpasses them in color saturation within the RGB spectrum. Against Aputure Nova panels, the Gemini scores with higher build quality and more precise color reproduction, but costs approximately 30% more.
