Compact 1x1-foot LED panel with CRI/TLCI 95–98, 3200–5600K stepless adjustment, 55–105W power and flicker-free operation up to 100+ fps.

Intro

The Litepanels Astra is a lightweight, compact 1x1 foot LED flat panel, ideal for mobile productions, interviews, and detail lighting. The series is characterized by uniform light distribution without hotspots, high color accuracy, and flexible control options. The system is energy-efficient, operates silently, and offers optional Bi-Color or Daylight output.

History & Development

Litepanels developed the Astra series in response to the growing demand for compact, energy-efficient LED lights in the broadcast and film industries. The first Astra 1x1 was released in 2016 and quickly established the standard for 1x1 foot LED panels. In 2017, the more powerful 6X version followed, and in 2018, the Bi-Color variant. With the acquisition of Litepanels by Bron Elektronik in 2021, the product line was further developed and expanded with app-based control options.

Practical Use in Film

The Astra is primarily used as fill or accent lighting, for example, in interviews, product shots, or as a practical LED panel for mobile shoots. Its low weight and silent operation make it ideal for Steadicam setups or tight shooting locations. On the Netflix series "The Crown," Astra panels were frequently used to simulate window light. The uniform light distribution without additional diffusion saves setup time, while flicker-free operation at all frame rate combinations provides confidence.

Comparison & Alternatives

The Astra directly competes with the ARRI SkyPanel S30-C and the Creamsource Vortex8. Compared to the SkyPanel, it offers a more compact design with lower maximum output, while the Vortex8 delivers more output but is heavier. Modern alternatives like the Aputure Nova P300c or Quasar Science Q-LED offer similar specifications at sometimes lower prices. The Astra scores points for its proven reliability and precise color reproduction but loses out on innovation compared to newer RGB-based systems with extended color functions.
