Wide color gamut standard for digital cinema projection, covering 25% more colors than Rec.709.

Definition

DCI-P3 is the color space standard for digital cinema projection, defined by the Digital Cinema Initiatives. It offers a significantly larger color gamut than Rec.709 (HDTV) and is the basis for modern HDR displays.

Practical Application

All DCPs (Digital Cinema Packages) for theatrical distribution are mastered in DCI-P3. Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac), high-end monitors, and HDR TVs support DCI-P3. It is the compromise between Rec.709 and the even larger Rec.2020.

Technical Details

DCI-P3 covers approximately 45% of the CIE color diagram (vs. 35% for Rec.709). Primary colors: R (0.680, 0.320), G (0.265, 0.690), B (0.150, 0.060). White point: x=0.314, y=0.351. Gamma: 2.6 (cinema) or sRGB-like (displays).
