Technical Details
Standard artificial silk for film sets is made of polyester or nylon fibers with a material thickness of 0.08-0.15mm. The fabric density varies between 120-200 threads per square inch, with denser variants producing stronger diffusion. Common sizes are 6x6, 8x8, 12x12, and 20x20 feet for overhead setups. The material is heat-resistant up to 80°C and weighs approximately 180-220g per square meter. Special variants like "China Silk" (particularly thin) or "Tough Silk" (reinforced for exterior shoots) expand the spectrum.
History & Development
Artificial silk established itself in Hollywood in the 1940s as a cost-effective alternative to real silk, which had been used for light diffusion since the 1920s. Mole-Richardson introduced the first standardized artificial silk frames in 1952. In the 1970s, Matthews Studio Equipment developed more heat-resistant variants for high-powered tungsten spotlights. Modern LED lighting, since 2010, has enabled thinner materials due to drastically reduced heat generation.
Practical Use in Film
Artificial silk primarily serves as overhead diffusion for even illumination of large areas or as a side light modifier in front of lights. In "Her" (2013), DoP Hoyte van Hoytema utilized large-scale artificial silk setups for warm, diffuse interior lighting. For exterior shoots, it softens harsh sunlight – Roger Deakins used 20x20-foot frames with artificial silk for the desert scenes in "Sicario" (2015). The material creates soft shadows without color shift and is particularly suitable for portraits and dialogue scenes.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to diffusion filters, artificial silk loses less light and creates more natural shadows. Softboxes offer pinpoint control, while artificial silk provides large-area diffusion. Modern alternatives like ripstop nylon or specialized diffusion fabric surpass artificial silk in durability and wind resistance. For extreme weather, polyethylene diffusion replaces the more sensitive material. LED panels with integrated diffusers reduce the need for separate artificial silk, but cannot fully replicate its organic look.
