4x4 ft. aluminum frame with interchangeable fabric panels for diffusion, reflection, or light blocking on set.

Definition

A 4x4 Floppy is a flexible light shaping tool (light modifier) used in professional film and television production. It is a 4x4 foot (approx. 120 x 120 cm) rectangular frame made of aluminum or carbon, which can be covered with various translucent or opaque materials. The term "Floppy" refers to the flexible nature of the stretched material, which, unlike rigid panels (Solid Frames), can be easily curved and adjusted.

The standard 4x4 foot format has established itself as an optimal compromise between manageability and efficiency. Depending on the covering, the 4x4 Floppy can be used as a diffuser (Silk, Grid Cloth), reflector (Bounce), or cutter (Flag/Cutter). The most common materials are Quarter Stop Silk for light diffusion, Half Stop Silk for medium light reduction, or Full Stop Silk for strong softening.

Practical Application

In film practice, the 4x4 Floppy is primarily used for controlled light shaping. Placed between the light source and the subject as a diffuser, it converts hard light into soft, even light, reducing unwanted shadows. The flexible nature allows for targeted influence on light distribution and avoidance of hot spots by slightly curving the material.

The equipment is typically mounted on C-stands or special grip arms and can be quickly repositioned between different setups.
