Overview
The ZEISS CP.3 (Compact Prime, third generation) is a series of prime cinema lenses from ZEISS, introduced in 2017 as the successor to the CP.2. These are not lighting or grip equipment, but camera optics for film and TV production. The lenses cover full frame, making them suitable for Super 35 and full frame sensors.
The CP.3 XD is the variant with eXtended Data: technically identical in construction to the standard CP.3, it adds an interface for transmitting lens metadata. The XD technology is based on the Cooke/i standard and additionally provides ZEISS-specific data on distortion and shading, calculated in real-time for every focus point and every effective T-stop. This data accelerates VFX and post-production workflows, as corrections do not need to be determined manually.

A uniform front diameter and largely identical external dimensions allow for quick lens changes without reconfiguring the matte box and follow focus. The Interchangeable Mount System (IMS) allows the mount to be swapped between different camera platforms.
On-Set Usage
The CP.3 is frequently used on gimbals, drones, and in documentary and commercial productions due to its compact design, low weight, and full frame coverage. The XD variant utilizes the metadata interface: the Cooke/i contacts are located on the PL mount, and the lens body also has a LEMO connector for data output. Compatible cameras and recorders can embed the data into the recording; in post-production, distortion and shading can be corrected automatically with this data.
Since the standard CP.3 and the CP.3 XD are optically identical, the final image does not differ – the added value of the XD version lies exclusively in the data workflow.
