VP Stage

Studio stage equipped with LED walls and ceiling (LED Volume) displaying real-time backgrounds while providing interactive in-camera lighting and VFX.

Overview

VP Stage is short for Virtual Production Stage – a filming space that is entirely or partially enclosed by high-resolution LED walls, also known in set jargon as an LED Volume or simply "The Volume". Photorealistic 3D environments are displayed on the LED surfaces – usually from a game engine like Unreal Engine – in real-time. A tracking system coupled to the camera calculates the correct perspective (parallax), so that the background is displayed in sync with camera movement, and the visual effects are created directly in-camera (In-Camera VFX, ICVFX) rather than in post-production.

A VP Stage is therefore not a single device, but a set infrastructure consisting of display, tracking, and rendering technology. It is relevant for lighting and grip because the LED surfaces are not just a background image, but also a large-area, self-illuminating light source.

Setup and Components

A typical volume consists of several functional layers:

  • LED Wall: usually arranged in a curve, often in a wide arc up to nearly 360 degrees, serving as the background and main motif.
  • LED Ceiling: provides overhead lighting (sky fill) and creates reflections on actors, costumes, and surfaces.
  • LED Floor (optional): extends the environment downwards and enhances immersion.
  • Camera Tracking: captures the camera's position, orientation, and focal length for correct background perspective.
  • Render Engine and Media Server: generate the image content and synchronize it to the panels via LED processors.

All components are synchronized via Genlock to ensure that the camera and LED output run in exact temporal alignment, preventing flicker or moiré.

Use on Set – Lighting and Grip

The crucial difference from a green screen: the LED surfaces illuminate the set themselves. The image displayed on the panels falls as interactive, emissive light onto actors and props, creating motif-appropriate reflections – such as lights and reflections on vehicles, glass, or costumes, without separate reflective surfaces. Individual panel areas of the wall or ceiling can be controlled precisely to set specific reflections or lighting accents.

In practice, the cinematographer and gaffer work closely with a virtual production supervisor, who acts as the interface between the lighting department and the virtual content. Virtual lighting tools allow for adjustments to the color, saturation, and brightness of the sky fill, as well as virtual practical lights. Since the volume usually provides only part of the lighting, it is typically supplemented with conventional fixtures and grip equipment; the grip department is also responsible for the rigging structures from which the wall and ceiling panels hang.
