UHD is a specialized term used in filmmaking and video production.
The UHD standard is based on ITU-R BT.2020 and supports 10-bit or 12-bit color depth compared to the 8 bits of HD formats. The data rate for uncompressed UHD signals is approximately 12 Gbit/s, while H.265/HEVC compression reduces this to 15-25 Mbit/s for streaming. UHD supports the extended Rec. 2020 color space with a 75% larger color palette than Rec. 709. Additionally, the format enables variable frame rates from 23.976 to 120fps, as well as object-based audio via Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.

UHD differs from DCI 4K in its 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 17:9 and is primarily intended for home cinema distribution. 8K (7680 × 4320) already surpasses UHD in resolution but remains limited to premium productions. Full HD continues to suffice for television productions without streaming distribution, while UHD has become the minimum standard for Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. Bei UHD-Produktionen achte ich verstärkt auf Schärfentiefe-Management, da die höhere Auflösung jede Unschärfe gnadenlos offenlegt – 85mm-Objektive werden zu meinen Freunden für natürliche Hauttöne. Das erweiterte HDR-Spektrum eröffnet mir neue Belichtungsmöglichkeiten, ich kann bis zu 6 Blendenstufen mehr Information in den Highlights speichern. Allerdings benötige ich teurere Cine-Objektive, da Foto-Gläser bei dieser Pixeldichte ihre Grenzen zeigen.
UHD erlaubt mir in der Post extreme Reframes ohne Qualitätsverlust – ich kann aus einer Totalen drei verschiedene Einstellungsgrößen schneiden. Das HDR-Grading gibt mir emotionale Kontrolle über Lichtstimmungen, die in HD unmöglich waren, besonders bei Nacht- oder Kerzenlichtszenen. Gleichzeitig zwingen mich die sichtbaren Details zu perfekterem Production Design – jede Requisite muss UHD-tauglich sein.
UHD verdoppelt meine Speicherkosten und verlängert Render-Zeiten um Faktor 3, aber Netflix zahlt 20% Aufschlag für echte UHD-Deliveries. Die Post-Pipeline wird komplexer durch multiple HDR-Versionen, ich brauche HDR-Monitore ab 15.000 Euro für jede Schnittstation. Dafür erreiche ich Premium-Streamingplätze und internationale Verkäufe, die sich nicht mehr mit HD-Material zufriedengeben.
