Compact timecode generators by Tentacle Sync (Hamburg) for DSLR/mirrorless synchronization. The 18g Tentacle Sync E runs 35 hours and syncs multiple cameras frame-accurately via LTC/Bluetooth.

Technical Details

The Tentacle Sync E (current generation) measures 68 x 20 x 13 mm and weighs 18 grams, operating with internal temperature compensation for quartz stability. The device generates LTC (Linear Timecode) and syncs via Bluetooth with its accompanying app. The battery lasts up to 35 hours, and the internal clock runs precisely for up to 5 days without external power. Connections are made via a 3.5mm jack, with an optional BNC adapter for professional cameras. The Tentacle Sync Studio software supports all common NLE formats (Final Cut Pro XML, Avid, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve).

History & Development

Founded in Hamburg in 2012 by Ulrich Voigt, Tentacle Sync launched the first Tentacle Sync Original in 2014. The company recognized the market gap between expensive professional timecode systems (starting from 3,000 Euros) and the synchronization problems in DSLR productions. In 2017, the Tentacle Sync E followed with improved app integration, and in 2020, the Track E for pure audio synchronization.

Practical Application in Film

In multi-camera productions like "4 Blocks" (TNT Series), Tentacle Sync enabled precise synchronization of up to eight cameras with separate audio recording. Documentary filmmakers use the devices for long interviews without cable connections between camera and boom pole. For music videos, the system synchronizes playback recordings frame-accurately with multiple camera perspectives. Automatic synchronization in post-production significantly reduces editing effort – instead of manual waveform synchronization, assignment is done via software automation.

Comparison & Alternatives

Tentacle Sync positions itself between consumer solutions like PluralEyes (pure software synchronization via audio waveforms) and professional systems like Ambient Lockit (starting from 1,500 Euros per device). Modern cameras with integrated timecode (RED, ARRI Alexa) make external timecode generators redundant; for DSLR and mirrorless productions, Tentacle Sync remains the standard. Zoom F-series recorders offer integrated timecode generation but do not achieve the compactness of Tentacle devices.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
