Overview

The 7.1 Surround format is an extension of the 5.1 standard with additional rear surround channels. It offers more flexibility in spatial audio design and is preferred in premium cinema chains.

Channel Layout

Front Channels (3 Channels)

Left (L): Left front speaker
Center (C): Center front speaker
Right (R): Right front speaker

Side Surround Channels (2 Channels)

Left Surround (Ls): Left side surround (90° from front)
Right Surround (Rs): Right side surround (90° from front)

Rear Surround Channels (2 Channels)

Back Left (Lb/Bl): Left rear surround (135-150° from front)
Back Right (Rb/Br): Right rear surround (135-150° from front)

Subwoofer Channel (1 Channel)

.1 (LFE): Low-Frequency Effects channel

Object Positioning

Ls/Rs: Primary surround position for side effects
Bl/Br: Spatial extension and rear ambient sounds

Ambient Treatment

Room tones can now be distributed across all four channels for more natural acoustics.

Effect Panning

Moving effects can pan more smoothly across the entire surround field.

Downmix Compatibility

7.1 must be compatible with 5.1 and stereo:

Bl and Br are typically downmixed to Ls and Rs
Careful level adjustment is necessary

Speaker Requirements

Positioning for 7.1

Ls/Rs: 90-110° from the centerline (as in 5.1)
Bl/Br: 135-150° from the centerline, slightly elevated

Calibration

All speakers should be calibrated to 85 dB SPL (THX) or 83 dB SPL (DCI).
