SuperTechno (also Super Techno Crane): remotely operated camera crane series by Technocrane s.r.o. featuring a telescoping jib arm with wireless remote head.
SuperTechno (often also written "Super Techno Crane") is a series of telescoping camera cranes manufactured by Technocrane s.r.o. Unlike a classic jib or fixed-arm crane, the boom features an extendable telescopic arm that can be continuously lengthened and shortened during a shot. The camera is not mounted directly at the end of the arm but on a remote-controlled remote head; the system is operated by a camera operator at a separate control console.
The SuperTechno belongs to the Technocrane family. The basic principle of the telescoping camera crane was developed by Horst Burbulla; the inventors of the Technocrane were honored with a Technical Oscar (Scientific and Technical Award) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2005.
The combination of boom movement (up/down arm motion), travel (on dolly/track or vehicle), and telescoping allows for complex, fluid camera movements that are not possible with a rigid crane arm. The arm can extend and retract during movement, allowing the camera to be guided through narrow openings, past objects, or in arcs without abruptly changing the distance to the subject.
The SuperTechno series is offered in several sizes (including SuperTechno 15, 30, 50, and 75). The model number refers to the approximate maximum lens height in feet. Example values for the widely used SuperTechno 30 model (manufacturer specifications or rental company data sheet):
| Parameter | SuperTechno 30 |
|---|---|
| Max. Lens Height (underslung) | 30' (9.2 m) |
| Telescoping Range | 22'8" (6.91 m) |
| Telescoping Speed | up to 6'/sec (1.83 m/sec) |
| Total Weight | 2,881 lbs (1,307 kg) |
| Max. Tilt Angle | +60° / -57° |
The smaller SuperTechno 15 model is significantly lighter and more compact, designed for a maximum payload of around 80 lbs, while the larger models (50, 75) achieve correspondingly longer boom lengths and telescoping ranges.
The SuperTechno is among the most widely used telescopic cranes and is considered an all-rounder, employed outdoors, in studios, and on location. It can be configured for almost all film cameras and lenses and, depending on the setup, also supports large formats (e.g., 65 mm). It is used for dynamic establishing shots, tracking shots, and choreographed movements, often mounted on dollies or tracking vehicles. Setup and operation are handled by specialized grip/crane personnel.
