ETC PAR wash light with HPL lamp and interchangeable lenses for variable beam angles.

Overview

The Source Four PAR is a PAR-style wash light from the US manufacturer ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls). It belongs to the Source Four family and shares the HPL lamp with the Source Four ellipsoidal (Leko) – an advantage on set as only one lamp type needs to be stocked. Unlike a classic PAR64 with an integrated lamp/reflector unit, the Source Four PAR works with a separate HPL lamp, a dichroic reflector, and a set of interchangeable lenses that allow the beam spread to be changed without swapping lamps.

Technical Specifications

  • Lamp: ETC HPL (single-ended halogen lamp), available in 375W, 575W, and 750W, among others; standard color temperature approx. 3250K, longevity variants approx. 3050K.
  • Efficiency: According to ETC, the 575W version delivers comparable light output to a 1000W PAR64.
  • Housing: robust die-cast aluminum.
  • Optics: dichroic reflector; the lens is housed in a rotatable and removable ring (snap-in system) for quick changes.

Lenses and Beam

The beam is determined by interchangeable lenses rather than lamp positioning. Typically, a set includes four lenses, plus an optional extra-wide lens:

LensAbbreviationBeam Shape
Very Narrow SpotVNSPround
Narrow SpotNSPround
Medium FloodMFLoval
Wide FloodWFLoval
Extra Wide Flood (optional)XWFLround

The oval lenses (MFL, WFL) produce a wider beam in one axis; rotating the lens ring allows this oval beam to be oriented. The round lenses (VNSP, NSP, XWFL) produce a uniform beam in all directions.

On-Set Use

The Source Four PAR is used as wash and background light: for even surfaces, fill light, and color washes (with gels). The quickly interchangeable lenses make it flexible for tight specials to broad, soft washes without needing to swap units. Standard accessories like barn doors and color frames fit the front slot.
