Snapgrid

Overview

SNAPGRID® is a registered trademark of the manufacturer DoPchoice and refers to a foldable fabric honeycomb grid (English: eggcrate or honeycomb grid) for light control. It is placed in front of the light-emitting surface of a softbox or light frame and channels the light forward. This narrows the beam angle of the light, reduces spill light, and directs the light more precisely onto the subject without uncontrollably illuminating the background or adjacent areas.

Unlike rigid metal honeycombs, the SNAPGRID is made of fully sewn, lightweight textile fabric with reinforced seams, which can be folded and transported compactly. It typically complements the SNAPBAG® softboxes from the same manufacturer but is also available as a directly mountable version for many LED panels, tubes, and light frames.

Beam Angle

The specified degree value indicates the beam angle that the grid allows through. A low value produces a narrower, more directed beam, while a higher value produces a wider, softer cone of light. The angle is determined by the cell size; according to the manufacturer, the depth of the grid remains constant across all variants.

Mounting

The SNAPGRID is attached directly to the front of the softbox or the corresponding light frame using hook-and-loop fasteners. Mounting and dismounting are tool-free and take seconds; the grid can then be folded and stored compactly. The models are precisely matched to specific softbox sizes and fixture models and are named accordingly.

Usage on Set

Eggcrates like the SNAPGRID are primarily used with large, soft light sources whose wide-spreading, diffuse light would otherwise be difficult to control. Typical applications include preventing spill onto the background, isolating a subject, cleanly separating multiple light areas, and mitigating lens flare risks. The soft light quality of the softbox is maintained, while the directionality and control are significantly increased.
