SIRUI 20mm T1.8 anamorphic cinema lens with 1.33x squeeze and autofocus for Super 35 sensors.

Overview

The SIRUI 20mm T1.8 1.33x S35 AF is an anamorphic cine lens from the Chinese manufacturer SIRUI. It combines a 1.33x anamorphic squeeze factor with autofocus – a rare combination for anamorphic lenses – and is designed for cameras with Super 35/APS-C sensors. When shooting in 16:9 and subsequently desqueezing, an aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1 is achieved, offering the classic widescreen look with oval bokeh and horizontal flares.

The lens is available in two flare variants: Blue (strong blue streak flares) and Neutral (subtle, uncolored flares). It is offered with multiple mounts, including Sony E, Nikon Z, FUJIFILM X, Micro Four Thirds, and Leica L.

On-Set Usage

Due to its low weight and compact design, the lens is suitable for handheld shots as well as gimbal and vehicle mounts. The fast T1.8 maximum aperture supports low-light shooting and provides significant background separation with the oval bokeh typical of anamorphic lenses.

Autofocus with eye tracking is unusual in the anamorphic realm and simplifies documentary or one-person crew setups where a dedicated focus puller is not available. As a focus-by-wire system, it can also be combined with compatible electronic follow-focus solutions. Firmware updates can be installed via the USB-C port.

Perspectives

Cinematographer
